In this interactive activity, students construct and analyze a pedigree chart to track inherited traits across multiple generations of an alien species. The student begins by scanning individuals to complete the pedigree, noting differences in sex, leaf color, and generational traits. They then assign genotypes for bark and eye color based on observed dominant and recessive traits, using standard notation for uncertain alleles. By labeling each individual correctly and verifying their work, students gain hands-on experience with Mendelian inheritance, dominant and recessive alleles, and how traits are passed through generations. The activity concludes with a reflection on pedigree analysis and genetic prediction.
